Secrets of a Confederate colonel’s abandoned dream home

Dare you discover its startling backyard secret?

Talk about a dream house in disrepair. This lovely antebellum house in the northern Virginia backcountry, originally the residence of a Confederate colonel, was suddenly abandoned some time ago. Just before the lockdown, renowned urbex photographer Bryan Sansivero was given unique access to the house and discovered a disturbing secret in the garden. Would you dare go on a tour?

Impressive construction

Built in the Greek Revival style, the mansion is believed by local historians to have been constructed between 1853 and 1856, with little money spent. The two-story mansion is one of the best and largest in the neighborhood with 14 rooms, 12 fireplaces, an attic, and an English basement. A kiln on the land produced an astounding 300,000 bricks, which were utilized to construct the basement and chimneys. Unfortunately, the outside is barely recognizable from before. One of the chimneys is covered in Virginia creeper vines, the once-immaculate white clapboard has become a dingy gray color, and the remaining shutters are decaying.

Foreboding entrance hall

The foyer of the house is gloomy and dark. A few antique chairs are piled on top of one another, and a desolate crimson velvet-upholstered French Second Empire style sofa faces them. Although there is rubbish all over the floor and the carpet is filthy, the room appears to be in fair condition and ready for remodeling.

Beat-up bedroom

The upstairs rooms are in equally bad shape, much like a time warp house, although they do have some beautiful and probably pricey antiques in them. Who knows why exactly they were left behind? For example, this bedroom features a stunning Victorian cabinet. A antique 1960s TV, a chintz bedroom chair, and an old suitcase are also present in the room.

Neglected tombstones

The cemetery had the remains of over fifteen members of the original family who had resided on the land. Unfortunately, considering the general state of the graveyard, the tombstones are in terrible condition and the persons buried there seem to have been forgotten.
