Pendleton-Graves House – Abandoned Southeast

Established in 1793, Revolutionary War Veterans formed Hancock County. The National Historic Trust has designated a portion of Sparta’s downtown as a historic area. This region features 28 historic structures from the late 1700s to the mid 1800s that may be seen in less than two miles on foot. The Pendleton-Graves home, which is all that’s left of an original 1820s complex, is a superb example of an urban 19th-century mansion. The house also includes a barn. About 1820, Thomas Whaley constructed the home. Dr. Edmund Pendleton purchased it in 1853 and expanded it to suit his eleven children. Pendleton, who established a corporation in 1867, was among the pioneers in the utilization of cottonseed for fertilizer manufacture. He backed the founding of Liberia as a haven for Africans who had been set free. Opening in 1887, R.A. Graves built the first commercial bank in Sparta and added the Victorian touches. Please proceed with caution if you show!
