In the center of DeLand, Florida, the United States, near Stetson University, lies the abandoned Putnam Hotel, which may be found at 225 West New York Avenue. Henry Addison DeLand, the city’s founder, erected the first hotel on this location in 1880 before the Putnam Hotel was built there. Benjamin Edward Brown bought the hotel in 1906, and he and his wife ran it. Sadly, the original building was destroyed in 1921 after an explosion in the basement ignited a fire.

William J. Carpenter, known for his expertise in architecture, was approached and hired in late 1922 to design and supervise the construction of the new structure. The new Putnam Hotel opened its doors in 1923. The 128 hotel rooms in the fireproof building previously served to house affluent northerners on vacation.

Up until they handed it over to their son Robert Horton Brown and his wife Sarah Hargreaves Brown, Benjamin Brown and his wife remained to run the hotel. The hotel has continued to be used as a hotel for guests and residents, and it now houses two nightclubs.

The hotel’s interior has undergone significant changes, although the outside has mostly maintained the original Carpenter design. Jerry Rocco purchased it in 1974 and transformed it into 46 flats with a separate bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living area. There are now just 26 fewer hotel rooms thanks to Jerry Rocco.

One visitor, Stephen Hughes, killed Elmyra Winfield and her unborn child in 1984 when he shoved Winfield down the Putnam Hotel’s fire escape when she was pregnant. He was later located by the authorities, and he received a 15-year prison term. Ghost hunters say there is paranormal activity in hotel and they witnessed two spirits that dwell in hotel.

The hotel experienced financial problems in the 2000s, and Jayne Rocco, Jerry Rocco’s wife, acquired the structure in 2009 as part of a divorce settlement. In June 2013, she disposed of the home. The Putnam Hotel was thereafter shut down and left for dead. The Putnam Hotel hotel building was supposed to be renovated and converted into flats, but as of 2022, it was spooky.
