This 9-bedroom mansion was constructed in 1765 by British military officer Roger Morris and holds the title of being Manhattan’s oldest home. Some guests to the mansion, which is now a museum, go there to see the location where George Washington once resided, while others travel there in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the ghost of one of the mansion’s original tenants. Because of her marriage to Morris Jumel and the success of her real estate firm, Eliza Jumel was considered to be one of the wealthiest women in all of New York.
Her husband was found dead under unexplained circumstances, and some people believe that Jumel may have had something to do with his death. Despite the fact that Eliza passed away more than 150 years ago, her ghost is supposed to still inhabit the home. Visitors claim to have heard footsteps and rustlings, and some of them claim to have seen a strange woman shushing pedestrians. They were able to identify this woman as Eliza based on the portrait that was found inside. The museum has gotten to the point where there is so much talk about how haunted it is that they now provide regular paranormal investigation tours.
