Abandoned Sanzhi UFO Houses – Now Demolished

A group of unfinished, pod-shaped structures known as Sanzhi UFO dwellings were located in Sanzhi District, New Taipei, Taiwan. The Sanjhih UFO Houses, also known as the Sanjhih Pod Houses or Sanjhih Pod City, were built in the early 1980s as a holiday resort in a region on the northern coast close to Danshui and were sold to US military officials returning from their East Asian assignments.

Yu-Chou-Co, a maker of plastics, had the initial concept for concrete structures with fiber-reinforced plastic coatings. Due to financial difficulties in 1980 brought on by a significant loss of investment, the project was forced to shut down and subsequently be abandoned for over ten years.

In order to complete the project, Tsai Chin-Hsien, the head of the Haicheng Tien local beer firm, seized control of the site in 1989. Sadly, it quickly became clear that the initial plans were not as structurally strong as had been assumed, and Ufo Houses were built in a way that was unable to withstand the area’s seismic activity. UFO dwellings in Sanzhi were abandoned once more.

Even though a petition was filed to save one of the buildings as a museum, the Sanzhi UFO homes were set to be demolished in late 2008. On December 29, 2008, demolition work on the property started with the intention of developing it into a tourist destination with hotels and beach amenities. By 2010, all of the UFO homes had been destroyed, and work had begun to transform the area into a for-profit waterpark and coastal resort. The location of the old Sanzhi UFO homes is currently vacant as of 2022.
