Abandoned Houtouwan village (shengshan island china).

Located 64 kilometers (40 mi) east of Shanghai, China, Houtouwan is an abandoned fishing town on the northern side of Shengshan Island, one of the 400 Shengsi Islands. At one point, the village—which was founded in the 1950s—had over 2,000 fisherman living there. The population started to drastically drop in the 1990s as a result of inadequate employment prospects, education, and connections to the mainland. The community was entirely abandoned by 2002.The once-bustling hamlet has been replaced with vegetation since it was abandoned, and it is now a well-liked tourist destination.
