An abandoned ancient structure called Constanța Casino, which is situated on the Black Sea coast, is a potent representation of Constanța, Romania. This historic casino was Romania’s most majestic structure a century ago, housing the elite of Europe and the globe.
On July 24th, 1910, most of the work had been finished, which had started in 1907. The casino debuted in August of 1910, however the building’s final touches were not finished until 1912. It was Romania’s biggest structure of its kind when it was finished.
The architect Petre Antonescu, whose architectural ideas are influenced by Romanian art traditions, created the original blueprints for the structure. After laying the foundation, the designs are altered, with the City Hall entrusting Daniel Renard, a French (or Swiss) architect, with the task. Renard rejects Romanian design principles in favor of a plethora of ornamental embellishments that add even more weight.
Until the Second World War, Constanța Casino was the major seaside meeting place for wealthy gamblers. During WWII, the freshly constructed casino housed German troops and served as a military hospital.
Following WWII, the Cazinoul din Constanţa was owned by Romania’s Board of Central Tourism, which maintained the site as a tourist attraction until 1988, when it underwent a comprehensive renovation. A team of plastic painters led by Sorin Dumitru, Gheorge Firca, Ioan Miturca, Nae Mira, and Nicolae Moldoveanu renovated the casino. Baroque fresco, stucco, and stained glass paintings have been completed.
The ornate structure’s upkeep gradually became extremely expensive, and it was demolished in 1990. The abandoned casino in Romania will ultimately be renovated in 2022. The interior of the building would be refurbished to act as a cultural center, according to the designs. Inside, a permanent exhibition about the building’s history will be set up.
